Profane found in reading

The Culture of Stone: Sacred and Profane Uses of Stone Among the Dani pg 188

In nine chapters, Hampton describes, first, the evolutionary, cultural, and environmental context of the Dani, arguing for a "contextual" and "holistic" approach that asserts the crucial interrelationship of all parts of a cultural system. After the stage is set, chapters two, three, and four detail the kinds of stone tool produced and used among the Dani: "profane" stone tools for utilitarian purposes, symbolic stone tools termed "display-exchange" stones serving a primarily sociopolitical function, and "sacred" stone tools that house the spirits of departed ancestors. These various categories of tools are described in great detail, both as to their material and form and with regard to their function and meaning within Highlands culture.
