The Culture of Stone: Sacred and Profane Uses of Stone Among the Dani pg 188
In nine chapters, Hampton describes, first, the evolutionary, cultural, and environmental context of the Dani, arguing for a "contextual" and "holistic" approach that asserts the crucial interrelationship of all parts of a cultural system. After the stage is set, chapters two, three, and four detail the kinds of stone tool produced and used among the Dani: "profane" stone tools for utilitarian purposes, symbolic stone tools termed "display-exchange" stones serving a primarily sociopolitical function, and "sacred" stone tools that house the spirits of departed ancestors. These various categories of tools are described in great detail, both as to their material and form and with regard to their function and meaning within Highlands culture.

Affable
Expedient
The following passage is from the book They Say I Say, "We must develop public policies on substance abuse that are guided not by moral righteousness or political expediency but by common sense (86)."
Stating that policies of substance abuse is currently in the best self interest for the person of power rather than by common sense.

Clamor
This picture is a perfect example of the word clamor. In this picture the baby birds are making a clamor because they are hungry.
Here is a sentence that clamor could be used in: The baby birds started up a loud clamor when they saw their mom bringing back food.

Affinity
In Chapter 6 of my CMST 192 textbook, one of the subjects was affinity. Here is what it had to say:
Affinity "One dimension of relational communication is affinity: The degree in which people like or appreciate one another."

Jargon
Hindrance
I once used the word hindrance in a sentence to describe something.
"One of are teammates is a real hindrance in how we play as a team out there."
"One of are teammates is a real hindrance in how we play as a team out there."

Opulence
What a breathtaking display of opulence. Although this is only a concept at the moment, it is encouraging to know that someone had the courage to dream it up.

Eloquent Speech
In my Communication Studies class, I presented a tribute speech in recognition of my older sister. While presenting my speech, I felt that nervousness began to erupt my speaking ability, but after the presentation my professor told me that the speech was very beautiful, and eloquent.

Torpor
My communications teacher used the word torpor in class yesturday. It just so happened that I was extremely torpor at the time and all I wanted to do was go and lay in my bed.
Sagacious
When I came back from class yesterday, I found that my button on my lap top was broken. After trying to fix my computer, I had a sagacious idea to go buy a mouse for it. I went to Shopko today and bought one for twenty dollars and now I'm broke.

jargon
In a reading for my English class, the authors composed the following sentence. "...quotations that are long and complex, that are filled with details or jargon, or hidden complexities (Graff 46)."
The authors are explaining that a frame or structure is necessary in order to clarify what is meant by quotes that use unfamiliar terms.

Graff, Gerald, Cathy Birkenstein, and Russel Durst. They Say, I Say. New York: W. W. Norton & Company, 2009. Print.
